Take the 1% Step Challenge

If you're anything like our family, there's a chance you've enjoyed some amazing mountaintop experiences and then slid a long distance down that mountain to hit some deep valleys.  These highs and lows may have been experienced physically, emotionally or spiritually.  We all walk unique paths in which God is continually guiding, teaching, loving and caring for us.

Through the past "almost" 21 years, we've had our fair share of deep valleys.  We've shared some of them in previous posts - Answering the "Why?" :: Part 1 and God is Still a Healing God.  Beyond the struggles with our health, we have also walked through financial valleys... and ultimately spiritual valleys.  It became easier to throw up our hands and give up than it was to keep going and keep growing.

When there was more expenses than income, we allowed our fears to take over and held on to what little we had rather than give it for God's use and glory.  We knew that God taught that He would pour out blessings to those who give.  It was just too hard to actually give.

Have you had those days?  those years?  All the instant, day-to-day needs seems so overwhelming.  Although God asks us to give FIRST to Him 10% of what we receive, it can become easier and easier to make excuses, prolong the giving, decrease the giving and possibly altogether stop the giving.

In recent years, we've been learning to live within our means.  That in itself was and is so very difficult.  We then challenged ourselves to give out of our firstfruits to God and then live within what was left.  Although we struggle to do this, God has been proving Himself faithful.

We came across a challenge that a pastor in a Texas church gave to his congregation.  He asked them to take the 1% step challenge.  We LOVE this concept!  If you are giving 10% to God's work, challenge yourself to give 11%.  If you are giving 5% to God right now, challenge yourself to give 6%.  If you are not giving anything to God right now, challenge yourself to give 1%.

It doesn't matter where we currently are in our giving... it's more about challenging ourselves to take just ONE STEP of faith and increase our giving by 1% to further God's kingdom in our church, in our community and around the world.  Can you just imagine how much of a kingdom impact would be seen if everyone takes just one step forward?!

We've decided to take the 1% step challenge this past week... will you?

Holiday Prayers...

We are praying God will provide 100% of our financial budget so we can begin ministry in Lyon, France by the summer of 2012. Please join with us in prayer that each financial partner that God is speaking to will take action now to reach Lyon with the Gospel of Christ!

Being ReachGlobal missionary candidates, God has placed us in an organization that loves to effectively prepare their staff to serve in cross-cultural settings. Our final training session before departing for the field is 3-pronged - two online courses (each 6 weeks long) followed by one onsite, 8-day training session in Minneapolis.  The training in MN is only offered two times per year - April & October.  We are aiming to attend in April 2012.  The online courses that prepare us for the April course begin in January 2012 (only 3+ months from now).  We need to have 50% of our financial needs committed by the end of December to be able to begin these courses.  We will then need to be at 75% by April to be able to attend the final onsite training session in Minneapolis.  Otherwise, our departure date will need to be moved out further to the end of 2012.

We would ask that you join us in specifically praying what we'd like to call "holiday" prayers...
  • Pray that 57 new financial supporters will make commitments and begin giving by this Christmas 2011!
  • Pray too that an additional 34 new financial supporters will make commitments by Easter 2012!
  • And, pray that the final 33 supporters will join the team by Memorial Day 2012!

God is at work all around us! He is working in...
...the lives of so many in France who we will one day we will meet, interact with and share His love
...our lives, preparing us for life & ministry in France
...others' lives, preparing them to join the Lyon Team as prayer partners & financial partners

Is He working in your life? What is He asking you to do?

Starbucks anyone?

Say you enjoy a cup of Starbucks coffee each day. This may easily cost $3-$5 (or more), depending on what flavor, size, extra shots, etc.

Now let’s say God is nudging you to give to His work overseas, but you don’t know how much to give. Well, how about becoming a “Starbucks” giver – give about $3 a day! As a “Starbucks” giver, you would be giving around $100 each month to missions! Awesome!

For our family to begin ministry in France, we need THREE new Starbucks Givers per week to join our monthly support team. Is God calling you to share a Starbucks with someone in Lyon? Consider giving to reach those who still don’t know the love & forgiveness that Jesus offers!

June Days for the Dahlgren Clan

Our June schedule, already eight days into it, is filling up quickly… prayers would be appreciated for our family as we tackle the delicate balancing act of work, family time, support team building and kids’ schedules.  Here is a rundown of what’s on the horizon:

·         June 5 – We had the pleasure of hosting many friends & family for Morgan’s graduation open house… it was like a family reunion/church friends’ get-together/kid bash all rolled into one.  Thanks to everyone who supported & prayed for Morgan and our family over the past 18 years - You are a true blessing!

·         June 15 (thru July 16) - Morgan leaves with a team from Adventures in Missions (AIM) for one month in Thailand ministering to the women caught up in human trafficking.

o   Pray for safety, amazing ministry opportunities, and that God’s love would be evident in & through them as they reach out in love to these young girls.

·         June 27 (thru July 2) – Bailey & Spencer will be heading to Chicago with other Nappanee Missionary Church youth to serve & learn about missions through the ChicaGO/SEMP program.

o   Pray for safety & God’s special working in & through their lives!

·         Easton finished up his spring soccer games while beginning his baseball league games.  He loves sports and has great fun playing all of them.

o   Pray for God’s protection during each game.

·         4-H projects for all four kids need to be completed; Bailey, Spencer & Easton will be working with their sheep to prepare them for show day in July.  Bailey is completing her ceramics project.  Morgan is completing her salon print project before leaving next week.

o   Pray for healthy sheep. (We’ve had 3 out of 8 sheep die in the past 2 years due to various crazy health issues… we need God’s protection on those little baa-baa’s!)  Also, that they would continue to learn responsibility, faithfulness and patience through the completion of these projects.

·         Steve and Chris will be taking an online class, Intentional Living, for continued training with ReachGlobal throughout the month and into the first week of July.

o   Pray we find quality time to study & learn about living intentionally in every part of our lives.

·         Steve and Chris are meeting one-on-one with families and churches to share more details about the ministry they will be involved with in Lyon.

o   Pray for quality time with many people.  Pray also that we will have the time needed to schedule these meetings while working full-time and supporting our kids’ activities.

Thanks, in advance, for all your prayers!  We know…

“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Matthew 19:26 (NIV)

Take My Life… Here I Am, All of Me

Quiet… aah!  That doesn’t happen much in our house.  Tonight is a different story.  Steve, Morgan and Bailey headed to Chicago this afternoon with the high school vocal jazz/dawning generation group, where they’ll be competing tomorrow morning.  Steve went along to accompany from the piano.  Easton was at church all afternoon and evening with a few friends helping the leaders set up for the dodgeball tournaments this weekend.  That left Spencer and me at home.  After enjoying a bite to eat at Cook’s Pizza uptown, we came home to do laundry, clean up the house, and work on support team building stuff.

Spencer loves to listen to Rhapsody while working… often singing along as it plays rather loudly to carry through the house.  I normally get quite annoyed with the volume, often hearing my mother’s words spoken through me.  I must be getting older! J  At any rate, I was signing more letters to be mailed out while enjoying a few worship songs playing.  I found myself actually listening to the words and began to worship God in a special, quiet way that I haven’t taken time to do in a while other than on Sunday mornings.  It was so refreshing… soothing… quenching my soul.  It also pierced my soul… challenged me… convicted me.

I realized how often I just rush through every day trying to accomplish all the endless list of things that need to be done.  Here we are at the end of another school year, yet it’s different.  Our oldest, Morgan, is graduating.  With this wondrous event come multiple more items to accomplish on my “To Do” list.

My list seems endless and unattainable right now… it includes:
·         Both of us working full-time…
·         Four teenagers in Jr. High and High School…
·         Easton in soccer AND baseball… lots of games and practices during each week…
·         Graduation open house…  invitations, food, house, outside…
·         College decisions… research, applications, forms…
·         Kids in 4-H with sheep… retinal scanning, feed, clean pen, work with them, meetings…
·         Bailey – completing 4-H ceramics project… lots of “painting” sessions…
·         Two musicals, one play, two spring choir concerts – FINALLY DONE (and well done)… Yeah!
·         Kids going to friends’ houses and inviting friends over…
·         Laundry… laundry… laundry…
·         Getting to Lyon France… sending info to families, churches… creating newsletters… entering blog posts… calling people for visits… visiting & sharing our ministry plans… praying… trusting…

By nature, I am quite self-sufficient.  As I look at the list above, in my own strength, I know it cannot all be accomplished.  Yet I find myself trying all the more to make it all work.  The more I try, the more I feel like I’m spinning out of control.

God is using the quiet of tonight and the time of worship to speak to me.  He’s reminding me that He is in control, not me.  My life is HIS, not my own.  He will give me strength in my weakness.  And, He is interceding for me.  Wow, how cool is that?!

“Don't panic. I'm with you.  There's no need to fear for I'm your God.  I'll give you strength. I'll help you.  I'll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.”
(Isaiah 41:10, The Message)

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
(Rom. 8:26, ESV)

So, as I close, I thought you may enjoy one of the songs that challenged me again tonight, performed by Chris Tomlin – ‘Take My Life’.  As I let go of my “To Do” list and give it all to Him, I am learning anew what it means to trust Him fully and allow Him to work in and through me.

Here are the lyrics:
Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of thy love.
Take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.

Take my voice and let me sing always, only for my king.
Take my lips and let them be filled with messages from thee.
Take my silver and my gold not a might would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use every power as you choose.

Here am I, all of me.
Take my life, it's all for thee.

Take my will and make it Thine it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord I pour at your feet its treasure store
Take myself and I will be ever, only all for thee,
Take myself and I will be ever, only all for thee.

Here am I, All of me.
Take my life, It's all for thee.

May God remind us again that our life is not our own, but His.  May He be glorified in all we do!

Full Support in Four Months?

SEPTEMBER 2011 UPDATE:  Thank you so much for your prayers during the past six months of building our ministry partner team.  Thank you also to those who have already begun partnering with us in this vital work in Lyon.  You are SO appreciated and we pray for you often!

We believe God is at work in US, in our partners, and in those we have yet to meet in Lyon.  We are excited to continue to grow and learn during this process of building our team.  We also believe wholeheartedly that we will begin ministering in Lyon when - and only when - God has prepared the way.  We rest, knowing that His timing is always best, even if it means we will not be heading to France until the summer of 2012.

Pray with us that God would open doors for us to share the great need for a Savior in Lyon to many friends and family here in the states.  Pray also that at least 50% of our ministry partners would join our team by Christmas 2011 so we can begin the next phase of our training with ReachGlobal.

Thank YOU for your faithfulness!
_________________________________________________________

Wow!  What a lofty goal.  Just as Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, we believe completely that – “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”  Would you take the next few minutes to read this extra-lengthy post and begin praying earnestly that our family could be fully supported by the end of August?

God blessed our time spent with the Lyon City Team and the International Christian Community of Lyon, and confirmed to each in our family that we should be returning to Lyon.

When can we begin serving?
Raising support for a family of six to live in France, one of the most expensive countries to live in, is beyond overwhelming.  Originally we were praying that God would miraculously provide a team of “senders”, those who would commit to a financially support our ministry on a monthly basis, by December 2011.  However, after our time in Lyon, there is a consensus that it would be best if we could begin serving by the end of August 2011.

Why move in August?
There are two main reasons we believe we should be in Lyon by the end of August.  First, ICCL needs us to begin leading the worship and fulfilling our administrative support roles.  Second, our kids need to begin the school year there in Lyon.

As new missionaries to any overseas field of service, most spend the first year or so in full-time language study before they can begin their specific ministry role.  We feel blessed to be begin ministry as soon as we arrive on the field.  Our main ministry position will be in the worship/music leadership in the church, International Christian Community of Lyon (ICCL).  Since this church plant is an English-speaking ministry, we can begin leading the music ministry within the services and community outreaches while simultaneously learning the French language full-time.  ICCL has been blessed to have someone who has helped in the music ministry in the past two years, but he and his wife are moving to London this summer.  We were called to replace him in this role. The best time transfer this leadership and to keep the growth of this church plant moving forward is to be there by the first of September.

Our kids’ educational needs are the other very important reason to be in Lyon before school begins the first week of September.  Bailey will be a junior next fall and Spencer will be a sophomore.  Easton will be in 8th grade.  The French Baccalaureate and International Baccalaureate (high school programs) are both two-phased approaches.  The French Bac is taught in French; the International Bac is taught in English.  Due to Bailey’s age, she will need to go the English route.  Spencer and Easton can follow the French route.  If they can begin the school year, they will have a better chance at succeeding in this new school format.  If we move later, there is a greater chance that it will be detrimental for Bailey’s future educational needs, as well as for Spencer and Easton in the French Bac program.

The first two years are in preparation for a placement-type of test, which helps to point the students into the best program for their final two years in high school.  The final two-year plan is focused on six subjects and culminates in final exams in each of six subjects.  It is a even more demanding program than the US-based high school diploma.  Since Bailey will be a junior, all the schools we talked with said she really needed to begin the two-year program in September or she’ll have a very difficult time succeeding with the final exams.  Spencer & Easton will be placed in a French immersion program in a bilingual program.  Due to Spencer going into 10th grade, she will also be at a disadvantage with completing the first two-year phase well, especially with the need to learn it in French.  She may need to repeat 10th grade to be able to successfully begin the final two-year program.

Morgan is at an educational crossroads as well.  She'll graduate in June, and is still deciding whether she should go with us for a year, either as a gap year or taking online University classes or even possibly at a French international business school.  She could also go straightaway to University here in the states.

All of this is quite confusing and overwhelming.  We trust that God has chosen us to make this move at this stage in our family’s lives.  It does, however, come with a price.  The kids understand that their schooling will be more difficult in general with the added pressure of French language acquisition.  As parents, we believe it is important to choose the best schooling option for each of them.  We do not want to have this overseas move cause them to struggle in completing their high school and heading on to university.

How much support do we need to raise?
Our support needs are broken into four main sections – start-up costs, personal expenses, benefits, ministry expenses.  We need to raise $50,000-$60,000 to cover start-up costs and have monthly commitments that total $13,500-$15,000.  These commitments will come from a team of individuals and/or churches that have chosen to financially giving on a monthly or annual basis.

Start-Up Costs:
This includes all travel to the field, shipping of household supplies, relocation funds, vehicle funds, pre-field training (readiness event, vision trip, orientation & candidate school), language up-front costs, conference, computer, rental security & deposit costs, and minimum IMA balance requirements.

Personal Salary & Living Expenses:
This includes a base salary equivalent to an EFCA associate pastor in the U.S., rent allowance, MK education fees, taxes and cost of living adjustment (which is currently figured at 45% increase).

Benefits:
This includes health insurance for the family, retirement fund, and service allocation to the ReachGlobal national office

Ministry Expenses:
This includes allocation to the area office, continuing education, office equipment & supplies, postage, shipping, passports & visas, travel & conferences, telephone, professional fees, prayer letter services, printed materials, technical equipment & services.

How can YOU help?
God has called each of us, as believers, to share in His plan to reach all people groups with the Gospel of Christ for His glory.

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”   Matt. 24:14 (The Message)

Three key roles need to be filled as part of the “Dahlgren Lyon Team” serving in Lyon – Goer, Sender, and Intercessor.  Our family is stepping out in faith as the Goers on the team.   We cannot go without a large, faithful team of Intercessors and Senders.

Intercessors –
We are looking for Intercessors who will pray “on the spot” upon receiving email requests, as well as those who have a special heart for prayer and would like to invest in our ministry more intentionally through prayer.

Senders –
We are specifically looking for people to commit to give on a monthly basis ($400, $300, $200, $100, $50) or an on annual basis.  We also need a special team of people who will support us with significant financial gifts toward our start-up costs.

Will you step out in faith as a SENDER on our team to reach the city of Lyon with the life-saving message of Jesus Christ?  We need immediate financial commitments and start-up gifts in order to be in Lyon by the end of August!

How can I become a ‘Sender’?
To commit on a monthly or annual basis, you can complete this form and mail it along with your first monthly gift to EFCA ReachGlobal.

Checks should be made payable to EFCA ReachGlobal with Dahlgren #1021 written on the memo line.  Mail checks to:

THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!
We would like to thank you VERY MUCH for your continued prayers for us during this support team building process and for your commitments to join our team as a sender or intercessor!  As God prompts each of us to share in His Kingdom Plan, we can together give Him all the praise and glory for how He brings together the “Dahlgren Lyon Team” in the next four months!

“Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever.  Amen!”  Revelation 7:12 (NIV)

He's an On Time God...

The reality of the ins and outs of what this move to France will take has come to the fore as we've been encountering daily life here in Lyon for this vision trip:
  • Learning the language to a level that we can truly communicate (rather than just saying bon jour, bonsoir, au revoir, pardon, où sont les toilettes?, and merci)
  • Choosing the right place to send the kids to school, and the ramifications on their long-term education that each choice means (total French immersion?  English only?  A combination?  Not to mention the expense of each of those choices and the reality that there are no organized sports or music options through those schools)
  • Understanding the cultural practices well enough that we don't constantly walk around in one big offensive way
  • Dealing with the fact that we will be living in a very expensive city with extremely limited means
  • Learning to live in an apartment again after almost 20 years of spacious home ownership
  • Metro (subway)/bus/train travel around the city
  • Being 'fit' enough to walk very long distances
  • Leaving our pets behind (two yippy maltese won't win friends in close quarters)
  • Learning how to live where everything is small--cups, beds, bathrooms, cars, portions
  • Selling our accumulated belongings
  • Being away from family and friends
It's such a long list, and by just taking 10 minutes to list them all, it might seem like we're living more in the human side of the equation than in the supplied grace that we'll need to sustain this calling. It reminds me of the story that I heard many years ago about the conversation that Corrie Ten Boom had with her father when she was concerned about her ability to live out her Christian faith in the midst of great trials:

“When I was a little girl,” I said, “I went to my father and said, ‘Daddy, I am afraid that I will never be strong enough to be a martyr for Jesus Christ.’”
“Tell me,” said Father, “When you take a train trip to Amsterdam, when do I give you the money for the ticket? Three weeks before?”
“No, Daddy, you give me the money for the ticket just before we get on the train.”
“That is right,” my father said, “and so it is with God’s strength. Our Father in Heaven knows when you will need the strength to be a martyr for Jesus Christ. He will supply all you need — just in time....”
So, we rest in the fact that we know that we are called to France to join Him in the work that He is doing to bring people into a worshiping relationship with Him.  We rest in the fact that it is only He who can give us all the strength and grace that we need--just in time!  We rest in the fact that He is an On Time God!

Psalm 116

We were asked the other day at our Support Team Building Boot Camp what Scripture we could go to when times got tough in the process of raising the support needed to get to France.  Of course, we are just a few weeks into this process, but those times haven't hit, because we've been blessed by people responding to the need to bring the Light to the darkness through prayer and financial support.

When times of discouragement come, I know that I have always found great refuge in the Psalms. I remember the time that we recorded a worship CD at Wakarusa Missionary Church a few years ago.  As part of that evening of recording, I read the precious words of Psalm 116, from the Message, that has for many years given expression to my gratefulness to Him for miraculously rescuing me out of the pit of depression many years ago, and the promise I've made to Him to pursue His heart and mission for me above my own misguided meanderings.

I suppose there's much more to write someday about that, but for now I'll just leave you with the link of the reading on that recording.

What can I give back to God
for the blessings He's poured out on me?
I'll lift high the cup of salvation—a toast to God!
      I'll pray in the name of God;
I'll complete what I promised God I'd do,
and I'll do it together with His people.

Building Our Support Team

Thursday and Friday of this week we will be joining others in Carmel, Indiana, in an intensive two-day Support Team Building “boot camp”.  The seminar is focused on helping Christian workers get to their ministry assignments quickly and fully funded.  Besides hours spent each week on our Perspectives homework, we have been diligently spending additional hours (lots of them) reading the support team building materials, doing their Bible studies, completing lots of homework and praying for God’s hand in our support team building efforts.  We have also begun sending out our initial letter, prayer card and commitment card to a number of friends and family.  We still have a lot more to send out.

It’s amazing how everything just takes a lot of time.  Everyone joked during our application/orientation week in Minnesota last month that this next phase, support team building, would be an additional full-time job on top of our already full-time jobs.  Inside we knew there would be lots of extra work to be done, but it was easy to think that “full-time” really didn’t mean “FULL-TIME”.  Now we know better.  It really does mean “FULL-TIME”!

We would truly appreciate your prayers on our behalf specifically for:
·         Thursday & Friday (3/17 & 3/18) – Support Team Building “Boot Camp” – that we would absorb all that we need to know to be most effective at raising up our support team.
·         Our time to be managed efficiently & effectively – balance between our jobs, time for our family & each other, and time to fit in all that’s necessary prior to heading to France.
·         Our support team building efforts – that we would be faithful in sharing our story, that God would work in hearts, and that our financial support team AND prayer support team would be built.
·         Our family as we visit Lyon, April 7-18 – meet the Lyon City Team, visit the ICCL (church), scout out potential schools for the kids, and experience French culture & life in Lyon – pray that God would confirm in our hearts, our kids’ hearts and the Lyon City Team’s hearts the call to serve in Lyon.
·         The sale of our house – it’s been on the market now for one year.  Pray that it will sell soon so this burden can be released and we can begin preparing for our move to France.

“That's why, when I heard of the solid trust you have in the Master Jesus and your outpouring of love to all the followers of Jesus, I couldn't stop thanking God for you—every time I prayed, I'd think of you and give thanks.”  Ephesians 1:15-16 (The Message)

Thank you for all the wonderful words of kindness and support that we’ve received already in this process!  We truly are blessed with wonderful friends and family, and thank God for you daily!
